Making Vet Trips with Your Cat Easy (or at Least Easier)
Taking your cat to the vet doesn’t have to be a stressful event for either of you. With a little preparation and some smart strategies, you can make the experience smoother, calmer, and maybe even—dare we say—pleasant. Here's how to set yourself (and your cat) up for success.
Instead of pulling the carrier out five minutes before you leave (and watching your cat vanish into thin air), keep it out regularly. Place a soft blanket and a favorite toy inside. Let your cat explore it at their own pace so it feels more like a cozy hideaway and less like a trap.
If your cat only rides in the car to go to the vet, it’s no wonder they think you’ve betrayed them every time. Try taking short rides now and then—just a few minutes around the block—to help them get used to the experience without the added stress of shots and thermometers.
Pheromone sprays (like Feliway) can help ease anxiety. Spray the carrier or use a pheromone wipe 15–20 minutes before you leave. Some cats also respond well to calming treats or supplements—just check with your vet first.
Cats are experts at picking up on your emotions. If you’re nervous, they’ll be nervous too. Speak softly, move slowly, and try to keep your energy relaxed and positive. Deep breaths help—both for you and your cat.
After the appointment, give your cat a treat, extra playtime, or snuggles (if they’re into that). Positive reinforcement goes a long way in building better associations with vet visits.
With some consistency and care, vet trips can become just another part of your routine—rather than a feline-fueled drama. Your cat might never love going, but you can definitely make it easier for both of you.
